Human and Biomedical Science Summary

This vocational course gives students a broad understanding of biological principles which underpin medical science. The course content covers human anatomy and pathology, health issues, scientific reporting, practical microbiology and infectious diseases.

In addition to the subject specific content, the requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education and employers; for example, the opportunity for extended research and investigative skill development.

How you will study

This qualification offers the opportunity for learners to complete coursework-based activities in addition to external examinations which are sat in Year 12 and Year 13. You will work independently and in groups, using a variety of methods to present your work. Practical lab
sessions are embedded into the course, where the techniques you will use will prepare you well for higher level studies in this subject area.

Unit 1- Principles of Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology – External assessment (25% of the qualification)

Unit 2- Health Issues and Scientific Reporting – External assessment (33% of the qualification)

Unit 3- Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases – Internal assessment (coursework) (25% of the qualification)

Unit 5- Biomedical Science – Internal assessment (coursework) (17% of the qualification)
