IT Summary

IT is an exciting subject due to the constantly changing speed of technological developments within industry. IT sills are considered to be key skills for line in the 21st Century. Students will learn and develop vital practical skills, which they can directly apply to real-life situations and professional scenarios. At the same time, they will also develop a solid foundation of theoretical knowledge and understanding necessary for their progression to university.

The qualification has three mandatory units and two optional units. By completing the two mandatory units in Year 12 you will have achieved the requirements for Level 3 AAQ Cambridge Advanced National in Computing: Application Development Certificate. Once you complete the course in Year 13 this qualification then becomes the Extended Certificate.

How you will study

Through a combination of theoretical study and hands-on experience, you will develop the necessary knowledge and skills that can support progression to higher education computing study. In the examined units, you will study key knowledge and understanding relevant to application development. In the non-examined assessment (NEA) units, you will demonstrate knowledge and skills you learn by completing applied or practical assignments. Component breakdown

There are three formal exams and two units of coursework. It is planned that you will take one exam in:

  • January of Year 12, 
  • June of Year 12 
  • January of Year 13

Achievement in this qualification can support progression to go on and study relevant IT degrees in a Higher Education institution such as Computing and IT, Computer Science, Software Development, Software Engineering, IT and Computer Networks or Business Information Systems.
