Music Summary

This applied course will provide you with opportunities to improve and develop your skills as a musician and build the necessary skills in order to move on into Higher education or an apprenticeship within the industry. You will be able study solo and ensemble performance, improvisation and composing, recording and sequencing but the units you complete are tailored to you as an individual in order for you to obtain the best possible outcome.

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it supports progression to higher education. Employers and professional bodies have also been involved and consulted to confirm that the content is appropriate and consistent with current practice for learners planning to enter employment directly in the music sector.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 x Grade 5 or above (including English Language and Mathematics);
  • Grade 5 (or Level 2 Merit) in Music or Grade 5 in Practical Music and a good understanding of music theory

How you will study

Unit 1: Practical Music: Theory and Harmony
Students develop knowledge and understanding of music theory and harmony in practical scenarios.
Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry
Students explore what it is that makes someone a professional in the music industry.
Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance
Students work as part of an ensemble to develop skills and techniques in rehearsal and performance.
Students will also take one optional unit.

Component breakdown

Learners taking this qualification will study three mandatory units: 

  • Unit 1: Practical Music Theory and Harmony
  • Unit 2: Professional Practice in the Music Industry
  • Unit 3: Ensemble Music Performance.

Students will also take one optional unit. 

With this course you can study lots of different courses including Music, Music Technology, Popular Music and Musical Theatre at university. This course is also great if you want to go on to work within the Performing Arts industry, not only as a performer, but as a technician, director, teacher amongst other jobs.
