Photography Summary

This A-level course of study will help improve your skills as a photographer and open doors to a range of higher education courses at university or opportunities in the creative industries. This is a two-year A-level course split between coursework and one externally set practical exam. Students will be taught how to use a DSLR camera and develop an understanding of how to process and capture images in manual mode. They will learn key skills and techniques such as aperture, shutter speeds, ISO, depths of field, painting with lights, panning, rule of thirds, Adobe Suite and RAW post-production.

They will also have the opportunity to explore contextual studies from a wide range of historical and contemporary sources. students will be expected to work independently to develop a concept and choose certain photographic techniques to specialise.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 x grade 5 or above (including GCSE Maths and English Language) 
  • Grade 5 (or Level 2 Merit) in a creative subject i.e Art, Textiles

How you will study

Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional media, processes and techniques. They should be made aware of both traditional and new media. 

Students should explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media on a variety of scales. Students may use sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate. 

Component breakdown

Component 1– Portfolio Investigation (60%): a sustained project evidencing the journey from initial engagement to the realisation and development of a final piece. The portfolio will also include a 1000-3000 word essay linking to the practical project. 

Component 2– Externally Set Exam (40%): students will respond to a chosen starting point and develop a series of investigations in preparation towards producing a final piece.

Students go on to study a wide range of courses at university or secure an apprenticeship placement. Taking A-Level Photography can lead to opportunities in Film, Architecture, Fashion, Design, Game Design, Advertising, TV etc.
