Spanish Summary

The A-level Spanish qualification provides the opportunity to further develop the linguistic skills acquired in Spanish GCSE through the studies of wide-ranging contemporary social issues and trends. The two-year course enables students to explore aspects of social, political and artistic life within Spain and Hispanic countries.  

It is a course which will foster a range of transferable skills, such as communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity all of which will be vital for employment or further study. In addition, the students will have the opportunity to explore Spanish culture through the study of literature and film. 

Entry Requirements

  • 5 x grade 5 or above (including GCSE Maths and English Language) 
  • Grade 6 in Spanish

How you will study

Students study technological and social change, looking at diversity and the benefits it brings. Students also explore the influence of the past on present-day Spanish-speaking communities. Throughout their studies, they will learn the language in the context of Spanish-speaking countries and the issues and influences which have shaped them. Students will study texts and film and have the opportunity to carry out independent research on an area of their choice.

  • Listening, Reading and Writing (2 hours 30 minutes) 50% 
  • Writing (2 hours) 20%
  • Speaking (21-23 minutes) 30%

As one of the facilitating subjects, studying a language A level can open up options when considering a university degree. Some of the possible career paths include banking and finance, hospitality and tourism, teaching, advertising and marketing.
